Strong rigidity to maintain cup shape
Smooth surface for printing branding and designs
Cupstock paper is the foundation of every paper cup. Without it, the cup would not have the strength needed to hold liquid or maintain its structure when hot drinks are poured in.
2. Why Paper Alone Cannot Hold Liquid
Even though cupstock paper is strong, it is still just paper. If you pour water or coffee into it, it would quickly:

Lose shape
Leak
That's why all paper cups require a barrier coating layer.
3. The Waterproof Layer: PE Coating (Most Common)
The most widely used coating in paper cups is polyethylene (PE).
Why PE coating is used:

There are two common types:

4. Eco-Friendly Alternative: PLA Coating
With growing environmental awareness, many manufacturers are shifting toward PLA (polylactic acid) coating.
Benefits of PLA-coated paper:
Made from renewable plant-based resources (like corn starch)
Compostable under industrial conditions
Reduces dependency on fossil-based plastics
However, PLA cups usually require specific composting conditions and may cost more than PE-coated options.
5. New Generation: Water-Based Coating
An emerging technology in paper cup manufacturing is water-based dispersion coating.
Advantages:
Plastic-free or reduced-plastic structure
Better recyclability in some systems
Improved environmental profile
This is still developing but is expected to become more popular as regulations tighten.
6. Typical Paper Cup Structure
A finished paper cup usually has three layers:
Outer layer – printed design (branding & marketing)
Middle layer – cupstock paper for strength
Inner layer – waterproof coating (PE / PLA / water-based)
This structure ensures both durability and functionality.

PE coating weight: 10–30 gsm
