Solutions for Color Fading of Disposable Printed Paper Cups Exposed to Sunlight

Color fading on disposable printed paper cups is usually caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight and UV radiation. To improve print durability and maintain vibrant colors, the following solutions are recommended:

1. Use High Light-Fastness Inks

The most effective way to prevent fading is to choose high-quality inks with excellent UV resistance.

Recommended options:

  • High light-fastness inks (Grade 6-8)
  • UV-resistant inks
  • Food-grade printing inks
  • Premium water-based inks

Note: Bright colors such as red, orange, and yellow tend to fade faster than darker colors like black and navy blue.

When sourcing inks, ask suppliers for:

  • Light Fastness Grade 7-8
  • UV Resistant Ink
  • Food Contact Approved Ink

2. Apply a Protective Coating

Water-Based or UV Varnish

Applying a protective varnish over the printed surface can:

  • Improve UV resistance
  • Reduce color fading
  • Enhance scratch resistance
  • Increase print gloss and appearance

Film Lamination

For premium paper cups, additional protection can be achieved through:

  • PE lamination
  • PLA lamination
  • Gloss lamination
  • Matte lamination

These layers help shield the printed design from direct sunlight and environmental damage.

3. Optimize the Printing Process

Proper printing and drying are essential for strong ink adhesion.

Key factors to monitor:

  • Printing pressure
  • Drying temperature
  • Curing time
  • Ink coverage

Insufficiently cured ink may become vulnerable to:

  • Fading
  • Smudging
  • Color transfer

It is recommended to allow printed materials to cure completely before further processing.

4. Improve Ink Adhesion on PE-Coated Paper

Poor surface treatment can reduce ink bonding strength.

Corona Treatment

For PE-coated paper, surface tension should ideally reach:

  • Minimum: 38 dynes
  • Recommended: 40-42 dynes

Proper corona treatment significantly improves ink adhesion and print durability.

5. Ensure Proper Storage and Packaging

Even high-quality printing can fade if products are stored improperly.

Storage Recommendations

  • Keep away from direct sunlight
  • Store in a cool, dry environment
  • Recommended temperature: 15°C–30°C
  • Recommended humidity: 40%–60%

UV-Protective Packaging

Use:

  • Kraft cartons
  • Opaque PE bags
  • UV-resistant packaging materials

Avoid long-term storage in transparent plastic packaging exposed to sunlight.
